Former employees of the media-dubbed ‘Compensation King' have welcomed news that their ex-boss has been served a writ for allegedly failing to pay a £4 million tax bill.
Mark Langford, who headed The Accident Group personal injury compensation company, was handed the writ by Inland Revenue bailiffs as he and his wife boarded their luxury yacht on the south coast of Spain.
His firm, which infamously trawled the streets looking for anybody who had a personal injury and might have been able to make a no win no fee accident claim, collapsed in May 2003. The majority of his staff only found out about their redundancies when they were sent text messages by their superiors.
Not surprisingly, Langford was not too popular among his 2,500 employees and a representative of the former personal injury compensation staff told reporters, "Those workers who had their lives turned upside down by this man will be celebrating this with bottles of champagne, providing they have managed to find new jobs."
Langford has been ordered to attend a bankruptcy hearing at Manchester County Court in March.
