A businessman from Surrey has been jailed for 60 days after continuing to expose staff to asbestos despite a court order.
The demolition worker had been banned from working in the asbestos removal business in August 2010 after being found guilty of putting his employees at risk of asbestos exposure.
However, despite this the man continued in the demolition trade working under different company names on at least 15 sites.
WorkSafeBC, the Workers' Compensation Board of British Columbia, brought proceedings against the man for being in contempt of his court order but initially lost the case. It later launched a successful appeal after the court found that the man had knowingly endangered his workers by not providing the correct safety measures, protective equipment, or training.
The court judge stated that the man's negligence towards his workers' lives deserved a severe penalty and sentenced him to serve 60 days in jail.
It has not yet been reported whether his employees will claim for asbestos exposure compensation.
