Government scheme for asbestos victims comes to an end

Victims suffering from asbestos related illnesses are urged to act fast as a Government fund to provide asbestos compensation is due to come to an end next week.

As from 1st August 2011 sufferers of pleural plaques, which are lesions on the lungs caused by exposure to asbestos, will no longer be able to claim compensation using a Government scheme.

The scheme came about following a ruling in 2007 when there had been campaigns for a change in the law to allow sufferers of pleural plaques to claim compensation.

In June 2010 the Ministry of Justice introduced the Pleural Plaques Former Claimants Scheme which enables victims who had attempted to make claims prior to 2007 to receive £5,000 in compensation. However, the deadline for applications is next week.

A specialist industrial illness lawyer has urged victims of pleural plaques to come forward and act quickly in order to apply for the asbestos compensation that they are entitled to before the scheme ends.
