A Labour councillor from Barking has spoken out about waiting times in his local NHS trust as he is waiting for X-ray results that he hopes will rule out mesothelioma as a diagnosis.
The man lost his own father to mesothelioma, and was educated at a school near an asbestos plant in his childhood. He has recently been experiencing a prolonged chest infection, and fears that this may be related to the industrial disease.
He said, "I've been waiting for the results so we can cross off some of the possibilities and can get a solution to my problem. I find it quite unacceptable."
The trust has stated that its turnaround on X-ray development is within ten days, except on rare and complex cases, and that it could not speak about individual cases due to confidentiality issues.
Mesothelioma is an asbestos-related cancer affecting the chest cavity, and is the subject of many compensation claims in the UK. Personal injury solicitors expect asbestos claims to peak in the next ten years.
