A maintenance contractor has sustained serious personal injuries after the excavator he was driving collided with an overhead motorway bridge in a serious accident at work.
The man had been using a wheeled excavator on the M1 when he drove into the bridge, causing him to be thrown over the steering wheel and through the front window of the vehicle.
As he fell his head collided with the blade of the excavator, causing him to sustain severe personal injuries which left him in a coma for two weeks.
Due to the severity of his injuries he was forced to take five months off work and still suffers reduced mobility in his left arm and leg which he receives physiotherapy for.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation showed that the worker had not received adequate training in using the excavator and had not been wearing his seatbelt at the time of the incident.
As a result of the accident at work, the contracting firm from Nottinghamshire was fined £12,750 after admitting a breach of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations at Mansfield Magistrates Court.
