A construction worker from Somerset has suffered serious personal injuries in a fall from height accident.
The 55-year-old man had been working on a gable end wall as part of a renovation project at Heathfield Barn when he fell from a platform and fell a distance of three metres to the floor.
The fall caused the man to suffer a broken back and various fractures to his arm and ribs. So severe were his injuries that it is unlikely he will ever work in the construction industry again.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation discovered that there had been some safety measures in place but they were inadequate to prevent the fall from happening.
Following a successful prosecution by the HSE, Taunton Magistrates' Court heard the man's employers admit to breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act and fined the firm £5,000 with a total of £2,680 in court costs.
An HSE inspector commented, "Employers need to ensure there is adequate supervision and fall protection in place while renovation activity of this nature is undertaken."
It has not been reported whether the personal injury victim will be pursuing a fall from height accident compensation claim through the civil courts.
