Fear of potential construction site accident injuries has led to three Aberdeen construction sites being closed recently.
Health and Safety Executive inspectors ordered the sites closed after it was found that workers were at risk of suffering construction site accident injuries. A number of hazards were noted, including dangerous work practices at height and issues associated with poorly used and installed equipment.
Inspectors also reported a number of asbestos-related hazards and issued prohibitions to six separate contractors.
HSE principal construction inspector Jim Skilling commented, "We were again disappointed at the standards of work we encountered.
"At one in three sites, we were sufficiently concerned about safety that we had to take formal legal action to stop work immediately. Our main concerns were unsafe working at height, but tidiness at one site was so bad we were also forced to act."
Pertinently, during the inspection-drive the HSE were called to the scene of a construction site accident after a man suffered injuries as a result of falling 25ft through a roof.
Mr Skilling said of the incident, "This is exactly the kind of accident our campaign is aimed at eliminating. The next person to fall may not be so lucky."
It is not known whether the injured man intends to make a no win, no fee compensation claim for the injuries he sustained in the accident.
