The number of personal injury compensation claims may fall after the Government announced plans to cut health and safety laws that "overwhelm business with red tape."
Currently being reviewed by Lord Young, health and safety legislation is being blamed for putting businesses under the burden of an "over application of health and safety."
While Lord Young described health and safety legislation as essential in some industries, he added that it may have been applied too generally and consequentially has become a burden on firms, community organisations and public services.
Lord Young supported the government's plans to curb legislation with examples of trainee hairdressers not being allowed to use scissors and children being told to wear safety goggles when playing conkers.
In a speech made last December about the UK having become saturated with health and safety laws, Lord Young said that wanted to reintroduce "common sense" into health and safety and concentrate legislation on where it is most needed.
The review of health and safety policies is hoped to ensure that legislation is focused on where it is needed and that the fear of compensation claims does not restrict the services which businesses, community organisations and public services provide.
