A 34-year-old Romford man who suffered a neck injury in a freak accident is seeking to make a compensation claim.
The engineer was driving his van on a road near a cricket pitch when a cricket ball, which had been hit for a gigantic six, smashed through his window before hitting him on the neck. The speed of the ball on impact has been calculated at around 60 mph.
The man was left in a state of shock, with blurred vision, and a substantial bruise on his neck, injuries which he hopes to make a successful compensation claim for.
It is possible that if the ball had him any higher it could have led to a serious brain injury or, worse, one that would have been fatal.
However, his compensation claim hopes are set to be delayed by a row between the cricket club and the council over who should be considered liable.
The council believe that the cricket club should be responsible for paying the neck injury compensation, while the cricket club claim that they have been seeking permission to build a safety net around the ground for thirty years.
They added that the council have denied them permission to do so because of fears that the net might lead to road traffic accidents, and fears that the council would be considered liable for any resultant no win, no fee claims.
Although witnesses first feared that the man had broken his neck, doctors at the local hospital said he had suffered no serious injury.
