A food production company was fined £20,000 in a prosecution brought by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after an employee lost the tip of a finger in a factory accident.
City of London Magistrates Court was told that a worker was asked to repair a dough divider machine, but as he put his hand into it the tip of his right index finger was severed.
An HSE investigation reported that important safety information on the machine was illegible, guarding devices were broken and it was in a poor state of repair. The company had previously been ordered to make safety improvements following a separate work accident.
It is not known if the victim of the factory accident will be making a compensation claim for personal injury.
