A hospital has agreed to make clinical negligence compensation payments to a young man who is now quadriplegic because of staff failing to diagnose a spinal abscess sufficiently quickly and then allowing him to develop an infection.
The combination of medical conditions has led to the 24-year-old father of two being confined to a wheelchair and needing 24-hour care. He also had a tracheostomy to help him breathe through a tube.
The man was aged 19 and living at Forest Hill at the time of the misdiagnosis of the abscess in his back when he was admitted to Lewisham Hospital in London for treatment.
Hospital authorities have admitted responsibility for his disablement and now his personal injury lawyers are negotiating details with the NHS Litigation Authority for a financial settlement to compensate him for loss of earnings and to provide funds for his ongoing care.
An interim payment has enabled him to move from a care home in Colchester to an adapted house in Great Holland so that his wife and daughters, aged five and three, can be with him.
When asked how he felt about receiving a damages payment for the clinical negligence, the spinal injury victim said he would give it all up to be able to walk again and that he had lost all faith in general hospitals.
