A mother from Stockton on Tees has been awarded £1,400 compensation for medical negligence after a local chemist admitted prescribing the wrong medication to her three year-old son who has Down's syndrome and epilepsy.
The chemist had mistakenly included 50mg capsules of the anticonvulsant medicine, Topamax, along with the prescribed 15mg capsules.
The mother noticed the mistake after giving the medication to her son over a number of days, and as her son had become unwell, she rushed him to a local hospital where he required an overnight stay.
The mother said, "If I hadn't noticed when I did, who knows what would have happened? It is scary."
Fortunately, her son recovered quickly and there were no lasting effects from the medicine mix-up.
The chemist shop owners agreed to settle the medical negligence claim, but did not admit liability for the mistake.
