A crash between friends

A 30-year-old man who took his friend's Mercedes without permission then caused a car accident has received a driving ban as well as a compensation order.

Wirral Magistrates' Court heard how the defendant took the car without first asking in order to pick up a friend. However, he caused a car accident when he crashed into a parked vehicle.

He did not stop following the collision, and instead returned the Mercedes back to his friend, interrupting his shower with the words, "Mate, I have crashed your car."

The defendant's solicitor argued in mitigation that although her client acted foolishly, it was unfortunate he caused a crash.

No one suffered personal injury in the car accident; however, magistrates served the defendant with a 12-month community order and a 12-month driving ban, as well as a £100 compensation order to pay for the motor accident claim insurance excess.
