A 65-year-old man from North Devon has been awarded a £6,000 personal injury compensation claim after suffering severe burns when a faulty gas canister was ignited.
The retired roofer had been repairing a stable roof for his daughter-in-law when the gas can he was using ignited and caused a fireball which completely engulfed him. The grandfather was forced to jump 12 feet from the roof he had been working on to safety.
The victim's brother-in-law used a hose pipe to dowse the flames and put the fire out.
The claimant was taken to the specialised burns unit at Bristol's Frenchay Hospital for treatment and was later moved to the North Devon District Hospital.
The accident caused the man to suffer severe burn injuries which have left him with permanent scarring to one arm and sensitive skin which is prone to irritation when exposed to direct sunlight.
After seeking advice from a personal injury lawyer, the man launched a compensation claim against the shop which hired him the faulty gas canister. He was later awarded £6,000 in personal injury compensation.
