Calls have been made for a heightened awareness of breast cancer misdiagnosis because errors appear to be occurring, it is claimed - and sometimes leading to medical negligence claims.
The problem is worrying patients and effecting treatments in the US, it has been reported, as well as raising costs.
To save lives, more accurate diagnoses are required, according to a chief medical officer at a diagnostic management company.
Gregg Allen is calling for the national health system to work to be more accurate. This should lead to costs for treating breast cancer to fall and for rates of surviving the disease to improve.
When cancer is caught early, patients are more likely to survive and treatment costs are lower too, reports the American Cancer Society.
The Premerus company wants breast cancer misdiagnosis to be avoided using their service to spot those doctors that seem to better read mammogram scans.
Mr Allen said his company, Premerus, is able to spot which doctors can get improved results for conditions such as cancer, diseases, body parts (bone or joint) injuries – then they can send a patient's scan to, apparently, the "most qualified" radiologists.
More details can be found in a press release about the issue that highlights how medical negligence claims could result from misdiagnosis.
