A landmark brain injury compensation amount has been awarded for a woman who was brain damaged after surgery following a successful compensation claim made by a personal injury solicitors firm.
The woman was left with permanent brain damage following a routine operation for gallstones which went wrong in 2001 at the Royal Hospital Haslar in Gosport.
In what has been described as a landmark case, the woman has been awarded £3.45 million personal injury compensation which will partly be given to her in a lump sum and partly in annual instalments to cover the care she needs.
Following the operation, the woman now has problems with her concentration and memory and is wheelchair bound.
Her medical negligence solicitor said, "This is a landmark case and important points of clinical negligence law were decided in the High Court and Court of Appeal."
Such a high brain injury compensation amount was awarded to reflect the ongoing care the woman will require.
