A Welsh couple whose daughter received a severe brain injury at birth have heard that they are now to have a date in court to decide a medical negligence compensation amount.
The date will be in July next year, by which time the girl at the centre of the claim will be six.
The hospital has already admitted that the baby should have been delivered earlier. She now needs oxygen and care round the clock, and will never be able to walk, talk, feed herself or sit up by herself.
Although doctors believed she would never smile, she learnt to do so last year.
A spokeperson for the hospital trust involved in the medical negligence claim said, "Expert evidence for the valuation of the claim is currently being gathered by both parties and will be discussed at a round-table meeting, to see if the trial hearing, set for July 2009, will be necessary."
They have also stated that the brain injury suffered was an isolated case that has been handled at a local level.
