Boy makes successful medical negligence claim

A teenager who was left brain damaged as the result of medical negligence has been awarded multi-million pound damages after making a personal injury compensation claim.

The 13-year-old boy was born fit and healthy in a Swansea hospital in March 1994 but developed a virus when he was just three weeks old. Medical staff carried out a lumbar puncture test on the baby but they failed to notice the subsequent "abnormal results".

With his virus - which turned out to be the herpes simplex virus - left untreated, the youngster suffered brain damage which resulted in permanent quadriplegia, learning difficulties and motor, visual and cognitive problems.

The teenager now requires 24-hour care and the £2.75 million of injury compensation won in the medical negligence claim will ensure that this is possible for the rest of his life. It will also mean that boy's family can move from their current two-storey home to a house more suitable to his needs.
