A new leaflet has been released by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) to give guidance on the handling of fatal work accidents.
Official statistics show that during 2006-07, there were 241 employees killed at work in the UK.
"Learning the lessons: how to respond to deaths at work and other serious incidents" aims to improve understanding of relevant procedures.
Peter Brown, the head of the health and work division of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), says: "Fatal accident investigations are always very serious, may involve various enforcement authorities and can also be lengthy, inevitably raising fears and uncertainties within organisations."
Ian Waldram, chairman of the group responsible for the publication, noted the importance of having a "pre-planned investigation arrangement" deployed for the management of work accidents involving serious personal injury or fatality.
He noted that the objective of creating the booklet is to ease the difficulties associated with a serious work accident and to give the company opportunity to learn for the future.
