A woman who was left with brain damage after a birth injury has been awarded personal injury compensation.
The woman was born in 1985 at the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast. During her mother's labour, an amniocentesis test was performed which led to a feto-maternal haemorrhage. The haemorrhage caused the baby to be starved of oxygen and, as a consequence, suffer brain damage.
The parents have fought a lengthy battle to try to secure medical negligence compensation by proving that the NHS was liable for their daughter's brain damage. They argued that her injuries were a direct result of a delay in performing a caesarean section which could have helped prevent her disability.
Following a High Court decision to decide liability on the case, the family will now receive a substantial amount of compensation for the birth injury.
