Spinal cord injury charity ASPIRE Hotspurs have won the title of Wheelchair Football Association National League champions in the first event for powerchair football held in England.
The team held onto their 100% record for the season, by seeing off West Bromwich Albion in the semi-finals and then managing an extra-time-win against the Northern Thunders in the final. The event took place in Nottingham on 18th March 2007.
Each team is comprised of four players, the majority of who have suffered spinal cord injuries, as well as sufferers of other serious personal injuries. Those with conditions such as spina bifida and cerebral palsy were also represented. All train at the ASPIRE National Training Centre in North London.
Nikki Baker from Harrow, ASPIRE Power FC captain said, "The weekend was a resounding success. We showed the strength of our whole squad with all of our teams doing so well."
ASPIRE was founded in 1983 to assist people with spinal cord injuries rehabilitate back into society.
Such events certainly mark a success for spinal cord injury rehabilitation, as ASPIRE's general manager Tasha Dyson said, "ASPIRE is very proud of the achievements the power chair team has made, the effort and commitment these players make to their training here at ASPIRE has been reflected in their results."
