A Cheshire ambulance crew, who refused to take a 14-month-old haemophiliac infant to a specialist unit in a neighbouring county, blamed policy and insurance for their apparent medical negligence.
The baby had fallen and cut his lip and, as he was a diagnosed haemophiliac, his mother dialled 999. His mother held paperwork detailing that in the event of an accident he should be taken directly to a specialist hospital in Lancashire.
However, the ambulance crew would only take the family to a local hospital, which caused a four hour delay from injury to treatment.
A representative for the hospital acknowledged that they have no haemophilia specialists and that the recognised treatment centre is the Lancashire unit.
A North West Ambulance Service representative said that an internal enquiry was being conducted, but would not comment further.
The family suffered similar treatment problems with another of their children and the father commented, "I think they have a big problem at Warrington Hospital"
It is unclear whether a medical negligence claim is forthcoming.
