Compensation for fall in actor's hotel room

Spanish actress Loles Leon, star of Pedro Almodovar's films Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, has won a payout for personal injury sustained in a fall while visiting Jeremy Irons' hotel room.

The 57-year-old Barcelona-born actress sustained a broken pelvis and broken wrist in the hotel accident and spent 36 days in hospital receiving treatment for her injuries.

It is possible that the payout for personal injury may include a sum for loss of earnings. The actress commented, 'I lost several jobs, I still see the physiotherapist, and I have never fully recovered.

The accident occurred when Miss Leon went to turn on the lights in Mr Irons' hotel room. They were not working. She then tumbled down 18 steps.

Explaining the circumstances of the accident, the actress said, "We met on a television programme called Vertigo. Later we went to dinner, to dance. We were with five or six people and we decided to go for one last drink in the hotel.

"As Jeremy is such a gentleman he insisted I went in (to the suite) first. There was a staircase, I went to turn the light on and I fell. I went flying. Everyone was screaming, including me.

"They didn't know what had happened to me. Jeremy Irons ran to reception to tell them to bring a torch to see what had happened.

"There were 18 steps, and I fell to the bottom. I could have been killed.

However, she failed in her bid to receive 100 percent compensation; the Spanish court ruled that the hotel could only be held partially responsible for the accident.

After receiving her payout for personal injury, the actress was keen to stress that there had never been any romantic link between herself and the married Mr Irons.
