The Yorkshire Evening Post has said that accident compensation settlements for ice-related injuries over the 2009/2010 winter could result in Leeds City Council paying out tens of thousands of pounds.
Nine separate accident compensation claims have been received by the council for incidents occurring between December 11 and January 6, with claimants having suffered a variety of ice-related injuries, including a pensioner who sustained head injuries after a fall in the city centre and a 47-year-old man who suffered multiple injuries in a "black ice" car crash.
And no-win, no-fee solicitors believe that there may be more claims to come. The partner of one firm commented, "It is likely that there are others who haven't yet submitted claims, either because they are still in hospital or still recovering and haven't had chance to go to a solicitor's office.
"How much compensation an injured person might claim depends very much on the type of injury.
"An injured party could receive a substantial award for the injury itself as well as compensation for time off work.
"Therefore, the potential cost to the council could easily run into tens of thousands of pounds."
Leeds City Council's Highways Department has said it is looking into each accident compensation claim on a case by case basis.
