Transport for London has announced plans for a Pedal Power cycle hire scheme across the capital that would see bicycle docking stations built in nine different boroughs. But while emphasising the environmental health benefits of cycling, the Environmental Transport Agency (ETA) greeted the news by reminding cyclists of their need for accident compensation insurance.
The ETA have called for cooperation from all London boroughs. An ETA spokesperson commented, "London has already experienced a 91% increase on its major roads since 2000 - the London boroughs that are dragging their feet must not be allowed to delay this exciting project."
The scheme would see would-be cyclists subscribing to the service so that they could then take hire bikes from docking stations, paying an hourly rental fee for the privilege. However, under the terms of the scheme the first half-hour would always be free.
A section of the ETA website deals with issue of cycling accident compensation. It advises: "Bikes are vulnerable to theft and in the case of an accident cyclists may need to seek compensation or even deal with a claim by someone else. Cycle insurance from the ETA includes new-for-old replacement, third party insurance, personal accident cover and if you breakdown, they will even come out and recover you and your bike."
The advice follows warnings made by personal injury solicitors in recent weeks that many cyclists underestimate the value of cycling accident compensation insurance.
