A former gymnast who had featured on sales literature promoting hip implants is now making a compensation claim against the company she modelled for after her own implant has left her in severe pain.
Eight years after the brochure was distributed around the world, the 51-year-old from Bath has had to undergo surgery to have the metal implant removed after concerns were raised that it could cause possible tumours or tissue damage.
The woman, who endured two years of severe pain as a result of the implant and feared she would end up in a wheelchair, is one of many seeking compensation from the pharmaceutical company.
Thousands have been urged to seek medical advice and almost 300 UK patients who had the implant fitted are taking legal action against the manufacturer who had already made a global recall of two implant devices.
Shocking evidence has revealed that the metal implants have twice the expected failure rate compared to other devices on the market and it has also been found that the implants lead to excessive wear of the hip joint, making any corrective surgery more difficult due to the bone damage.
The woman is currently seeking advice from personal injury lawyers in preparation for a group compensation claim against the pharmaceutical giant.
