What are the different types of amputation?
Amputations are generally classified as either upper-limb or lower-limb:

The major categories of lower-limb amputation include:

Foot Amputation: This is a catchall category that includes any part of the foot. It may be toes or a portion of the foot. The types of amputations that fall into this category are:
- Toe amputation
- Mid tarsal amputation
- Lisfranc amputation
- Boyds amputation
- Symes amputation
Transtibial Amputation (below the knee amputation): These include all of the levels from the knee to the ankle.

Knee Disarticulation: This amputation occurs at the level of the knee joint.

Transfemoral Amputation (above knee amputations):

This amputation includes all levels of thigh amputations from the hip to the knee joint.

Hip Disarticulation: This level of amputation is at the hip joint with the entire thigh portion being removed.

The major categories of upper-limb amputation are:

Hand and Partial-Hand Amputation: Includes finger, thumb or portion of the hand below the wrist.

Wrist Disarticulation: The limb is amputated at the level of the wrist.

Transradial (below elbow amputations): Any amputation that occurs in the forearm, from the elbow to the wrist.

Transhumeral (above elbow amputations): Any amputation that occurs in the upper arm from the elbow to the shoulder.

Shoulder Disarticulation: An amputation that is at the level of the shoulder, with the shoulder blade remaining. The collarbone may or may not be removed.

Forequarter Amputation: A shoulder disarticulation amputation in which the shoulder blade and collar bone are removed.
