A 52 year old woman who underwent a mastectomy after another patient's results were mistaken for hers is to pursue a medical negligence claim against the hospital who wrongly diagnosed the cancer in December 2003.
A two-hour operation was carried out to remove one of her breasts at Raigmore Hospital , Inverness , in December 2003 after a routine mammogram at her local breast screening unit. A slide of another woman's tissue sample was confused for hers, following a biopsy and MRI scan.
The chief executive of the hospital, said yesterday: "This was a tragic case where a mistake was made. We wish we could turn the clock back but we can't help what happened in this case.
"We apologised as soon as the mistake came to light. We would like to negotiate a reasonable settlement figure to avoid unnecessary court action."
The NHS Highland Board has conducted a full review of practices and procedures at the hospital to reduce the risk of this tragedy happening to another woman. However, their offer of £44,000 compensation has been seen as ‘an insult’ and the woman is now threatening to press ahead with a medical negligence claim
The woman said: "No one can understand what it's like to be told you have a disease that could kill you. Then to be told it was a mistake is just disgusting. They can't bring my breast back - I am disfigured for life."
The woman believes she that her claim is worth between £200,000 to £300,000, is prepared to go to Court if necessary.
