A British cyclist who won a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne has revealed that she suffered a serious spinal cord injury in a car accident in 2004.
Emma Jones was training on Manchester's roads when the car crash happened. A car caught the front of her bike while it was turning, throwing her to the ground.
Although she was unaware at the time, she had suffered a spinal cord injury and had crushed two vertebrae. A passer-by prevented her from moving and damaging her back further.
Over a period of four months, Mrs Jones received specialist care and treatment for her back injury. Although her doctors predicted that she would never cycle again, she slowly regained flexibility and movement and by early 2005 was given the go-ahead to start training once more.
After months of training to recover from her spinal cord injury, her hard work paid off and she came first in the race to decide the bronze medal winner of the women's 3km individual pursuit.
