A mother has revealed how she is lucky to be alive after plummeting 30ft from her first floor flat while sleepwalking.
Helen Moran, originally from Ireland but now living in Scotland, suffered serious personal injuries in the incident including a broken pelvis, a burst spleen, liver damage and brain injury, and was left in a coma for over a month. Doctors initially thought she would not make it through the first night, but life-saving brain surgery helped her to make a miraculous recovery.
The 37-year-old does not remember the accident and was discovered lying bleeding on the pavement beneath her balcony by a neighbour. Such was the extent of her injuries that he first thought she was the victim of a street attack. It later transpired, however, that she had climbed over the balcony in her sleep before plunging to the ground, leaving her two young children asleep and oblivious in their beds.
A year on, Ms Moran still suffers from memory and concentration difficulties and receives help from Glasgow-based brain injury charity Headway.
Talking about the incident, she said, “I had sleep-walked before but nothing like that. I don’t remember anything about it.
“Luckily my neighbour found me or I’d have bled to death. The police initially thought it had been attempted murder.”
Revealing the effects of the fall, she added, “Even the simple things like getting the shopping become a challenge when you are head injured.”
