A disgraced South Korean scientist has apologised after admitting that he faked some of his spinal cord injury research findings.
Repentant Hwang Woo-suk, who manipulated data in a series of papers, blamed his actions on his obsession with advancing stem-cell studies, but also hinted at a possible conspiracy against him. The disgraced scientist said, “I take full responsibility for the papers and offer you my apology.”
“My life will be spent undoing my wrongdoing. I can’t ever repay the debt fully until I die. We’ve gone crazy, crazy about work and I’ve been blinded.”
Hwang was a respected and popular scientist before his misdemeanours were exposed, and is credited with producing the world ’s first cloned dog. He has recently been researching methods of advancing treatment of spinal cord injury, and it is the results of this work which he has admitted faking.
His research had raised hope among those suffering from spinal cord injury because it seemed to hasten the day when a cure could be found. He had also received significant government funding over the last few years to further his exploration.
The scientist now faces criminal charges relating to fraudulently obtaining state funds.
