A schoolboy narrowly escaped suffering a spinal cord injury after falling 18ft through the roof of a disused warehouse.
Connor Irvine, 13, was playing football with his friends in Edinburgh when the ball was kicked on top of the roof of an empty Carpet Warehouse.
The Drummond Community High School pupil climbed on the roof to get the football when the plastic roof collapsed beneath him, causing him to fall 18ft to the factory floor. Fortunately, his fall was broken by a metal support beam.
Connor was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he was given morphine for his pain but was lucky to avoid suffering any serious personal injuries in the fall.
Fire-fighters who attended the scene later said that if he had not had his fall broken by the beam, he could have suffered a possible spinal cord injury.
His mum, Jacqueline said, “He’s been very lucky. His arms and legs have got tissue damage, but other than that, he’s fine.
“The paramedics said that if he’d had a straight fall, it could have been very serious. He could have suffered a spinal injury.”
After escaping a potential back injury, Connor is said to be just as keen to start playing football again with his friends.
He said, “I’ll definitely be playing football when I’m feeling better, but if it goes on the roof, I’ll be staying down.”
Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service were amazed Connor didn’t suffer a spinal cord injury.
A spokesperson said, “He was able to walk when we arrived. He’s a resilient boy.”
