People helping the environment could potentially suffer a back injury from lifting their heavy recycling bins.
The bins, used by millions of British homeowners, could spark hundreds of personal injury claims from people suffering from back injuries after lifting the heavy boxes.
When filled with glass and paper, recycle bins exceed recommended weight limits set by America’s National Institute of Occupational Therapy. The largest bin has a 55 litre capacity and weighs 22.1kg when filled with a mixture of paper and glass.
With back injuries costing the industry £5 billion a year, the study carried out by the Health and Safety Laboratory calls for smaller bins with a 40 litre capacity.
A spokeswomen for the GMB British general union said, "It's only a matter of time before a council taxpayer brings a claim against his local authority for back injuries incurred while putting their recycling out."
