Medical negligence victim considers personal injury compensation
A man is considering making a personal injury compensation claim after a bizarre case of medical negligence saw a hospital accidentally removing his healthy kidney.
John Heron, from Lugton in Scotland, was admitted to Ayr Hospital to have a cancerous kidney removed, but awoke to find surgeons had taken the wrong one. The garage owner now faces years of dialysis and will have to undergo another operation to have the diseased organ removed.
Understandably angry, Mr Heron’s son issued a statement saying, “We are devastated by the disastrous professional errors that should never have happened.
“We want to ensure that everything is now focused upon providing the best medical experience and care for my father.
“We want to be sure that no other family experiences this in the future.”
NHS Ayrshire and Arran, the health authority responsible for the blunder, have apologised profusely and are now planning how best to care for Mr Heron’s future specialist needs.
Their executive medical director, Dr Bob Masterton, said, “It is with deep regret I can confirm a patient had a healthy kidney removed.
“Our thoughts are with the patient and family, to whom we apologise for this tragic error. Staff are supporting the patient and family in planning for the best possible medical care for Mr Heron in the future.
Experts have revealed that if he chooses to make a personal injury compensation claim for medical negligence, Mr Heron, who is in his sixties, could win a considerable sum of money to help make his remaining years more comfortable.
