A man who was left paralysed from a hospital operation has been awarded more than £1 million in medical negligence damages.
David Skinner, 58, had been taken to hospital with a broken leg after his motorbike came into collision with a car in a road accident.
Suffering as a result of the motorcycle accident, Mr Skinner entered the hospital on crutches with a leg injury, only to leave the hospital confined to a wheelchair after admittedly being given an epidural to the spine negligently at Nottingham City Hospital.
The medical negligence left Mr Skinner paralysed from the waist down and he has also had to have his left leg amputated below his knee. He and His wife, Susan, have decided to sell their home and move to a bungalow, which will be better suited for wheelchairs.
Mr Skinner’s personal injury lawyer, Stephen Maguire, said the hospital failed to carry out the correct checks before administering the epidural.
He said, “The case has devastated the whole family”
Mr Skinner was awarded £1,040,000 personal injury compensation for the medical negligence but as a previously active man he says, “It does not mean anything really. I cannot get my legs back.”
