A man from Middlesex is celebrating after his personal injury compensation claim ended in victory, resulting in a £750,000 payout.
William Vincent sued Heatherwood and Wexham Park NHS Trust after a gall bladder operation went wrong in February 1996. Starved of oxygen, he suffered brain damage, changing his personality and eventually resulting in the breakdown of his marriage.
The van driver was left unable to work and his previously chatty and affectionate demeanour was transformed. He became verbally and physically abusive and his wife found herself unable to live with him anymore.
His personal injury solicitor, Martin Spencer QC, told the court, "Mr Vincent sustained a severe brain injury leading to widespread intellectual deficit.
"He still requires, and will always need, considerable support. He will never return to remunerative work."
Hospital managers accepted full liability for Mr Vincent's injuries and did not contest the personal injury compensation claim.
David Bradley, acting on behalf of the trust, said, "My client is most anxious I express its regret for the damage that has been caused.
"It could not be suggested for a moment that financial compensation can put it all right. But it is hoped that these damages will assist Mr Vincent to progress further, secure his future and provide his wife with a degree of peace of mind."
