Paralysed man to ride 1200km to raise money for spinal cord injury research

A British man suffering from a paralysing spinal cord injury is preparing for a mammoth 1200km charity cycle ride around the Netherlands using only his arms to generate 'pedal power'.

Matt Cole, originally from Bournemouth but now living in the Netherlands, is planning to begin his quest on July 8th and expects to spend up to four weeks in the saddle of his specially adapted bike, completing up to 55km per day.

The father of two was left in a wheelchair after a road traffic accident in 2004 and is paralysed from the waist down. Still having the use of his arms, and refusing to allow his injury to prevent him from having an active life, Matt has named his journey The Ride for Research and hopes to raise money for various charities including Spinal Research (www.spinal-research.org).

He said, "I want to raise awareness of spinal cord injury and help fund international spinal cord injury research projects. Many people, myself included, have first hand experience of a spinal injury or have witnessed the devastating effect that spinal injuries have.

"We are keen to see spinal research progress and are excited to be given this opportunity to help raise awareness and funding."
