A social worker who caused the death of a man in motorcycle accident has been jailed for nine months by judges.
The court heard how George Thatcher, a married father-of-three from Penge in London, ignored a ‘no right turn’ sign as he rushed to get home in the evening rush hour in June 2005. Pulling out in front of oncoming traffic, a Honda motorcycle smashed into the door of his Ford Focus, sending the rider catapulting into the air.
The motorcyclist was 36-year-old Andrew Howard, from Rotherhithe, and his wife and two sons were travelling behind in their car and saw the horrific road traffic accident unfold. A distraught Mrs Howard called the emergency services but her husband died from serious personal injuries before he could reach hospital.
Describing the motorcycle accident, James Brown, prosecuting, said, “Mr Thatcher turned right from a side road and collided with a Honda motorbike. The junction was no right turn and was clearly marked as such.
“Mrs Howard was immediately behind and saw what happened.”
Appearing at Inner London Crown Court, 52-year-old George Thatcher admitted causing death by dangerous driving and received a two year driving ban in addition to his prison sentence.
