Drunken row between friends results in brain injury

A drunk who stamped on his friend's head, causing serious brain injuries, has been jailed for five years at Mold Crown Court.

Unemployed Paul Bryan, 43, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm after attacking Richard Morris Lloyd during a drunken row in the Welsh village of Dwygyfylchi in August 2005. The incident occurred when Bryan became angry at the way 45-year-old Lloyd was acting towards his girlfriend, the recently deceased Diane Rimmer.

Judge John Rogers described the incident, saying, "The quarrel turned into a fight. Your friend went down and while he lay on the floor you proceeded to kick him.

The court heard how Bryan repeatedly stamped on his friend with such force that he shattered bones in his face and left him with serious head injuries and unable to breathe. Lloyd, who was the subject of an ASBO and had been described by locals as a 'neighbour from hell', was rushed to hospital after the assault and his brain injuries mean he is now in need of constant nursing care.

Sentencing Paul Bryan to his jail term, Judge Rogers said, "You are fortunate not to be facing a murder charge."

It is unknown whether Bryan and Lloyd remain friends.
