Chart-topping drummer killed in motorcycle accident

Martin Gilks, the drummer of popular 1990s band Wonder Stuff, has died after being involved in a motorcycle accident in London.

The 41-year-old suffered severe personal injuries in the incident in Putney on 2nd April and paramedics rushed to the scene. He was taken to St. George’s Hospital in Tooting but died a day later despite the best efforts of doctors.

Gilks and his band hit the big time in the early 90s, reaching number one in the charts with a cover of Tommy Roe’s single ‘Dizzy’. They also had success with ‘The Size of a Cow’ and ‘Welcome to the Cheap Seats’ before splitting up in 1994.

The original members of Wonder Stuff reunited for a brief series of gigs in 2000, and singer Miles Hunt reformed the band in 2004 with a completely new line-up.

Since his time with Wonder Stuff, Gilks - who also drummed for The Mighty Lemon Drops - became involved in the management side of the music industry and worked with groups such as Reef and Hundred Reasons.

Speaking after the motorcycle accident, a spokesman for Gilks’ company, Furtive, said, “He was greatly loved by many and will be sorely missed by all his family and friends.”

The drummer leaves behind a son and a daughter.
