Soldiers at Edinburgh’s Army Piping School have been ordered to limit playing to just 15 minutes a day and face a 24 minute restriction if playing outdoors.
The new rules were set out by the Ministry Of Defence in a bid to cut hearing problems and possible compensation claims if troops decided to contact a personal injury solicitor.
Soldiers have been told they should wear ear plugs if playing for long periods, as tests have shown that outside, sounds of bagpipes could reach 111 decibels and indoors could reach 116, the same level of noise as a chainsaw.
A spokesman for the Army said, “We have a duty of care to protect the hearing of all our soldiers.”
With about 100 soldiers at the bagpipe school, the loudness of the music could cause serious personal injury to anybody who may suffer loss of hearing.
Without the limits on time, anybody who did suffer deafness could possibly contact their personal injury solicitors and try to make a compensation claim.
